Emmis International: Hungary
In 1997 Emmis International won a government tender for one of the first two national commercial radio licenses in Hungary. Launched in 1998, Sláger Rádió hit the airwaves with an oldies format featuring the best music of the 60s and 70s from international and Hungarian artists.
It took just 90 days for the station to attain the No. 1 national ranking, and now Sláger reaches 35% of the Hungarian population, more than 3.5 million Hungarians each week. Bumerang has dominated as the country's #1-rated breakfast show for 4 years running with its provocative and entertaining content.
Sláger achieves this success by combining Emmis' international know-how with local Hungarian expertise to develop a product unique in the market. Through consistent audience research, Sláger keeps up with the changing needs of its listeners. Over time Slager has evolved into an oldies-based AC (adult contemporary) station playing the greatest hits of all time - maintaining Sláger's #1 position in Hungary.
Sláger has also developed new and innovative ways of reaching the Hungarian audience, such as the Sláger Mega Party - a high profile, high attendance free concert series throughout the country to say "thank you" to its listeners and community. The Budapest concert alone consistently draws more than 100,000 people!
The station also believes it has a special responsibility to help those less fortunate within its communities. In the late 1990s the station created the annual holiday Sláger "Angel" promotion to help families in need. In 2006 the station formed the Sláger "Angel Foundation" to expand its charitable activity throughout Hungary.
